Kansas City: The Trump Administration is diving right into immigration issues. On Inauguration Day, Trump signed several executive orders focused on the southern border. He made it clear that he sees immigration as a top priority, even over inflation.

Supporters cheered as he took action shortly after his inaugural speech. But not everyone is celebrating. Christy Moreno from Revolucion Educativa, which helps immigrant families, shared that many are feeling anxious. Parents are worried about sending their kids to school, fearing for their safety.

Moreno recalls the harsh policies from the past and how they affected families. She mentioned people who had to leave while their children stayed behind. The administration is pushing for stricter border enforcement, citing tragic stories like that of Laken Riley, a college student killed by a migrant.

A new bill aims to make it easier to detain non-citizens arrested for crimes. Trump stated that all illegal entries would stop, and millions of undocumented individuals would be sent back. Moreno fears that innocent people might get caught up in these actions, a sentiment echoed by immigration attorney Yanky Perelmutter.

Perelmutter has seen cases where law-abiding individuals were arrested just for walking their kids to school. He believes that while those who break the law should face consequences, it’s the innocent families that could suffer the most.

In Missouri and Kansas, estimates suggest over 100,000 people lack legal status, meaning any large-scale removal efforts could have a huge impact. Moreno pointed out that many immigrant families have mixed legal statuses, adding to the complexity of the situation.
