Topeka: Kansas lawmakers are back in Topeka for the new legislative session. This year, the Republicans have a bigger supermajority, which could help them push through some bills more easily.

The big focus this time around is the property tax bill. House Majority Leader Dan Hawkins mentioned that it might be one of the first bills introduced, possibly this week.

Last year, they passed a big tax package, but many felt it didn’t provide enough relief for property taxes.

Governor Kelly has said she had to make some compromises last year to allow for income tax cuts. However, she’s not keen on more tax cuts this year until she sees how they impact the state budget.

She’s asking lawmakers to take a step back and reassess, suggesting they wait until next year to discuss further tax cuts.

Hawkins, on the other hand, is confident about their chances. He believes they have the votes to pass the property tax bill, even if the governor decides to veto it.

Don’t forget, Governor Kelly will be giving her State of the State Address on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. It should be interesting to see what she has to say!
