Washington: So, Kansas is making some moves in Congress. They’ve introduced a bill to take the lesser prairie chicken off the endangered species list. This means it won’t be listed as threatened again.

The lesser prairie chicken is a type of grouse, and it’s split into two groups. One lives in Kansas, Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma and Texas, while the other is found in New Mexico and the Texas panhandle.

Right now, the southern group is endangered, and the northern group is threatened. For years, the Fish and Wildlife Service has been working with landowners to help keep their habitat safe.

On Tuesday, some big names like Representative Tracy Mann and Senator Roger Marshall got together to push this resolution. They want to make sure the bird can’t be listed as threatened again.

This bird hangs out in ranches and farmland, and there are concerns about its habitat being affected by oil and gas drilling. Just this year, Kansas even threatened to sue over its listing.

It’s worth noting that the Biden Administration has vetoed several attempts to delist the bird in the past. So, this is definitely a hot topic in the state.
