A new law in Kansas allows businesses to add surcharges for credit card users, sparking mixed reactions from shoppers.

This change comes after years of confusion about payment policies. Back in the ’80s, businesses could give discounts for cash payments, but that was deemed unconstitutional in 2021.
Chris Garcia, an assistant district attorney, mentioned that from 2021 until January 1, there was really no clear law on this. Now, business owners can add a surcharge for credit card transactions.
Shoppers have mixed feelings about this. Johnny Sutton thinks it makes sense for businesses to cover their costs when people use cards. He usually pays with cash, so it doesn’t bother him.
On the flip side, Peggy Doyebi isn’t thrilled about the new rules. She points out that we’ve been encouraged to use cards for everything, and now they’re going to charge us for it.
Interestingly, both Sutton and Doyebi haven’t noticed any businesses charging extra fees just yet. Some owners in the Delano area say they won’t implement the surcharge because they don’t want to lose customers.
