Lancashire: The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is coming back this month, and folks in East Lancashire are invited to join in. It’s the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey!

Last year, over 600,000 people across the UK took part, counting more than nine million birds. In Lancashire alone, over 12,000 people joined the fun.

This year, mark your calendars for January 24, 25, and 26. You just need to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in your garden, on your balcony, or at a nearby park, then send your results to the RSPB.

Since it started in 1979, this event has given us a great look at the UK’s garden bird population. Over 195 million birds have been counted, with nearly 12.1 million hours spent watching them.

Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s chief executive, shared that Big Garden Birdwatch is all about enjoying and connecting with the wildlife right outside your door.

She added that by participating, you’re helping to understand how garden birds are doing, alongside hundreds of thousands of other nature lovers.

Last year, the house sparrow was the most spotted bird, even though its numbers have dropped significantly over the years.

Ms. Speight emphasized that anyone can take part, whether you live in a city or the countryside, even if you don’t have a garden.

So, join in for Big Garden Birdwatch 2025 and let’s work together to help birds and wildlife thrive for future generations!
