Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Johnstown with music and community events

Johnstown: On Monday, many government offices in Somerset County will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This holiday honors the civil rights leader’s legacy.
The U.S. Postal Service won’t deliver mail, and PennDOT will close its driver’s license centers from Saturday through Monday. If you need to renew your registration, you can do it online.
Also, the Somerset County courts and most local banks will be closed. So, plan ahead if you need to take care of any business.
On Sunday, the Johnstown Branch NAACP and the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra are hosting a special concert at 3 p.m. at Greater Johnstown High School. It’s a tribute to Dr. King and marks the 60th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march.
Alan Cashaw, the NAACP president, invites everyone to join in and celebrate unity. The concert, called ‘Community,’ will feature performances from local choirs, including the Johnstown Symphony Chorus and the Flood City Youth Fitness Academy Chorus.
They’ll perform traditional spirituals and a piece by Julia Perry, an American composer whose work is nominated for a Grammy. How cool is that?
The theme of the event is ‘I am the Legacy of Resiliency,’ highlighting the strength and perseverance that Dr. King embodied. It’s a reminder of how resilience can inspire future generations.
Jymil Thompson, a school superintendent from Maryland, will give the keynote address. He has a wealth of experience in education and will share insights on Dr. King’s legacy.
Tickets for the concert can be bought online, but you can also get general admission tickets for $5 at the door starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, while supplies last. Bring your family and enjoy this meaningful event!
