Jennifer Rubin resigns from the Washington Post, criticizing Jeff Bezos as more journalists leave the struggling publication.
Washington: So, Jennifer Rubin, a long-time opinion writer for the Washington Post, just announced she’s leaving to join a startup. And wow, did she have some strong words for Jeff Bezos on her way out!
Rubin has been pretty vocal about her criticism of Trump, and recently, she didn’t hold back when it came to Bezos. She accused him of betraying the trust of readers and undermining journalism’s role in democracy.
She’s heading to a new Substack newsletter with Norm Eisen, a former Obama official. It’s called “The Contrarian,” and they’re promoting it as being free from corporate ownership.
Her departure comes as the Washington Post is facing some serious financial issues, reportedly losing around $100 million last year. Their web traffic has also dropped significantly since early 2021.
Just last week, the Post announced layoffs affecting about 4% of its workforce, mostly in public relations. It seems like things are really shaking up over there.
Rubin’s exit isn’t an isolated incident. Many journalists have been leaving the Post, especially after Bezos blocked the editorial board from endorsing Kamala Harris. This decision reportedly led to a wave of subscription cancellations.
Other notable departures include Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes, who resigned after her cartoon mocking Bezos was not published. She called it a blow to press freedom.
Bezos defended his decision, saying it was principled and aimed at avoiding bias. But many, including Rubin, see it differently. It’s a tough time for the Washington Post, and it looks like more changes are on the horizon.
