Louisville: In less than seven months, the largest school district in Kentucky will need a new leader. Superintendent Marty Pollio is stepping down, and the search is on for his replacement.

On Wednesday, the Jefferson County Board of Education plans to vote on hiring a national firm to help with the search. If everything goes as planned, they’ll start by gathering community input on what qualities the new superintendent should have. They aim to post the job application by February 1, according to JCPS Board Chair Corrie Shull.

The search committee, made up of 35 members from various parts of the city, has already suggested what the community survey should include and how to share it. The survey will be available on the district’s website, sent to JCPS families via email and text, and distributed in paper form to local organizations.

The feedback from this survey will help shape the candidate application. After the application is posted, a screening committee will review candidates and recommend who to interview. This committee will have up to seven members, ensuring minority representation if needed.

The goal is to conduct interviews in May and finalize a contract in June, just before Pollio’s last day on July 1. If they can’t find someone by then, the board will have to appoint an interim superintendent to fill the gap until a permanent one is chosen. Pollio himself started as an interim in 2017 before being hired permanently the following year.
