Federal prosecutors seek a 15-year prison sentence for Bob Menendez after his bribery conviction involving gold bars and cash.
Back in July, a jury convicted him on 16 charges. The case involved some serious cash and gold bars from three New Jersey businessmen and foreign governments.
During the trial, Menendez claimed he was just doing his job, helping out his constituents. His lawyer even said that’s what we want from our elected officials. But then he tried to shift the blame to his wife, who wasn’t even a senator.
He also said hiding gold and cash at home was just a “Cuban thing.” Come on! Menendez is the first U.S. senator ever convicted of acting as a foreign agent, and he did this after dodging a previous corruption trial in 2017.
Sure, he’s 71, and a long sentence could mean he might not make it out alive. But honestly, boo hoo. He’s facing up to 200 years for all those charges, and the prosecution is being pretty lenient by asking for just 15 years.
Let’s hope they throw the book at him when he’s sentenced in Manhattan federal court on January 29. That would be a fitting end to his corrupt legacy.
