Authorities are looking into the brutal death of a coyote by teens in Mount Greenwood, raising concerns in the community.

Witnesses reported seeing the teens abusing the coyote on South Sacramento Avenue around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. The coyote was found dead on private property, and police are currently looking into the matter. So far, no charges have been filed.
One resident, Dave Kielbasa, witnessed the whole thing. He mentioned that he had seen a black pickup truck driving recklessly in the area before the incident. When the truck returned, he saw the driver talking to the teens before they started jumping and stomping on the coyote.
Kielbasa confronted the group, and the driver simply said “sorry” before leaving. He even shared doorbell footage of the interaction, although it didn’t capture the actual beating.
Alderman O’Shea expressed his shock at the incident, stating it’s incredibly disturbing for anyone in the community to be involved in such behavior. Kielbasa noted that the coyote was part of a family that had been seen in the area frequently and had never harmed anyone.
In Chicago, coyotes are protected as “furbearers,” and Kielbasa called 911 right after witnessing the abuse. He feels strongly that the teens should be held accountable, not necessarily with severe punishment, but enough to understand the gravity of their actions.
