Chicago: The Intuit Art Museum, known for showcasing outsider art, is reopening on April 25 after nearly two years of renovations. It’s been a long wait, but the changes sound amazing!
Located at 756 N. Milwaukee Ave., the museum will now simply be called Intuit Art Museum. The reopening coincides with the EXPO Chicago art fair, which is pretty exciting.
They’ve revamped the whole place, adding new galleries and a special area for education and art-making. Plus, they’ve made the entrance more accessible, which is a big win for everyone.
Intuit has been a staple in West Town since 1999, focusing on self-taught artists from diverse backgrounds. The renovations aim to give these artists a bigger platform and make it easier for visitors to enjoy the art.
Debra Kerr, the museum’s president, mentioned that they want to respond to what the community needs. It’s all about sharing incredible stories through art.
One of the highlights will be a recreation of the Lincoln Park room where artist Henry Darger lived. His imaginative work is a big part of the museum’s identity, and visitors will get to see his materials up close.
They’re also adding large windows to make the museum feel more inviting. It’s a nice touch to let people peek inside and see what’s going on.
Accessibility is a priority, with new ramps and elevators being installed. Kerr emphasized that they want everyone to feel comfortable visiting, no matter their situation.
There’s also a new space called the Center for Learning and Engagement Opportunities, or CLEO, where visitors can hang out, read, and engage with the art.
With a $5 million grant from the city and additional funds from private donors, the museum is ready to welcome back guests. Admission will be $15, but it’s free for those 25 and under.
