Salt Lake: So, lawmakers in Hawaii are gearing up for a busy session with nearly 500 bills on the table. But right now, only one is tackling the serious issue of fireworks safety after some tragic New Year’s incidents.

There’s been a lot of pressure on legislators to do something about the fireworks that go off all night during New Year’s celebrations. It’s been a real problem, especially after five people lost their lives, including a little boy.

Governor Josh Green and Attorney General Anne Lopez are looking to make some changes this session. They want to improve enforcement and increase penalties for illegal fireworks. So far, the only bill introduced is Senate Bill 302, which would make it illegal to sell consumer fireworks without a special permit.

This bill would also stop sales of fireworks more than five days before any permitted cultural use. It’s a step in the right direction, but many more bills are likely coming to address the fireworks issue.

Political analyst Neal Milner says this is the biggest issue on the table right now. With the New Year’s tragedies fresh in everyone’s mind, lawmakers are feeling the heat to act.

At the start of each session, thousands of bills are introduced, but only a fraction actually become law. This year, there are also some recurring bills about hiking fees and lobbying regulations, but nothing compares to the urgency of controlling illegal fireworks.

On New Year’s Day, a dangerous firework exploded near a crowd, leading to several fatalities. It’s clear that people are demanding action, and lawmakers are under pressure to figure out how to enforce new laws effectively.

While there are no bills yet on legalizing cannabis or gambling, those topics are expected to come up again. Other bills are also in the works, like providing free meals for students and improving fire safety measures.

With so many issues on the table, it’s going to be an interesting session ahead. Everyone’s watching closely to see what changes will come.
