The VA is updating its sign-in process by 2025 to enhance security and ease of access for Veterans and their families

Washington: The Department of Veterans Affairs is shaking things up with its online login process. By 2025, Veterans, beneficiaries, and caregivers will need to use either Login.gov or ID.me to access services like VA.gov and the VA Health and Benefits app.
So, if you’re still using My HealtheVet usernames and passwords, you’ll need to switch things up because those won’t work after January 31, 2025. Plus, DS Logon credentials will be phased out by September 30, 2025.
The VA is making these changes based on what Veterans have been saying. They want fewer account options, and this move aims to make it easier to access benefits with just one secure sign-in.
Security is a big deal here. With identity theft and fraud on the rise, protecting sensitive information is crucial. In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission reported over a million identity theft cases, with Veterans losing around $350 million to fraud. That’s why both Login.gov and ID.me require identity verification and multifactor authentication to keep personal data safe.
Setting up an account is a breeze and takes about 10 minutes. Veterans can head to www.va.gov/sign-in-changes to create their Login.gov or ID.me accounts. If you’re already using one of these platforms, you’re good to go. But if you’re still on My HealtheVet or DS Logon, it’s a good idea to make the switch now to get comfortable with the new system.
If you need help, VA facilities are ready to assist. Just bring a government-issued photo ID and any necessary documents, and the staff will walk you through the process. The VA also has step-by-step guides, video tutorials, and downloadable fact sheets to make the transition smooth.
While these changes affect account-based services, many VA resources will still be available without signing in, like downloading forms or finding VA locations. However, having a verified account ensures you can manage your health care and benefits online without interruptions.
By taking action now, Veterans can be prepared for 2025 and beyond. The VA is committed to creating a simpler, more modern sign-in experience to make life easier for those who have served.
