Chicago: The Illinois health department just added four new conditions for medical cannabis treatment. Now, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and female orgasmic disorder can be treated with cannabis.

This is a big deal since it’s the first time the list has been updated since 2019. With these additions, there are now 56 approved conditions for medical cannabis in the state.

The process to get these conditions approved involved a review by the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board and the health department staff. Dr. Sameer Vohra, the director, gives the final thumbs up.

Dr. Vohra mentioned that medical cannabis can really help with various tough medical issues. He said the department carefully reviews petitions using expert opinions and the latest evidence to make the best decisions for Illinois residents.

Patients can start getting prescriptions for these new conditions right away. The health department noted that studies show cannabis can help manage chronic pain from endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and ovarian cysts.

Endometriosis happens when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing severe pain and other issues. About 10% of women worldwide deal with this condition.

Ovarian cysts can be solid or filled with fluid and can also cause significant pain. Uterine fibroids are common growths on the uterus that can lead to chronic pelvic pain.

As for female orgasmic disorder, it’s when a woman has difficulty reaching orgasm. The health department believes cannabis can help women who struggle with this issue.

These four new conditions join a list that already includes autism, Alzheimer’s agitation, migraines, Parkinson’s disease, and traumatic injuries to the spinal cord or brain.
