Alisha Green shares her journey of leaving the Amish community for freedom and self-discovery

Lancaster: Alisha Green, 26, recently opened up about her life after leaving the Amish community. For the first time, she cut her hair and wore jeans. It was a big change for her.
Alisha grew up in a strict Amish and Mennonite family. Her parents and grandparents were part of the community, and she was homeschooled. She felt the pressure to marry and start a family instead of pursuing a career.
She explained that the community kept people in line through fear. They warned that leaving would lead to bad things happening. Alisha realized this wasn’t true when she took her driving test at 18.
In May 2024, after a week alone while her family was away, she decided to leave. With help from friends, she packed up and hasn’t contacted her family since. They believe she’s been influenced by the devil.
Alisha said she’s met many kind people since leaving. Life outside the Amish community is different and sometimes scary, but she feels free. She’s grateful for the support she’s found and is excited about her future.
