A couple’s cozy at-home engagement proves that love doesn’t need grand gestures
I remember coming home exhausted and wanting to cancel our plans that night. My boyfriend, who had been with me for four years, was really pushing for us to go ice skating. I thought it was odd, but I was too tired to think much of it. Even though I had marked the date on my calendar, I just wanted to relax at home.
After a bit of back and forth, I finally convinced him to stay in. Thirty minutes later, I was in my comfy sweatpants, enjoying a random episode of “Seinfeld.” Suddenly, he got up from the couch and knelt down in front of me with a ring. I was totally caught off guard when he asked, “Will you be my wife?” It was such a sweet moment, and the show was still playing in the background.
Interestingly, a survey showed that more women are leaning towards private proposals these days. While many couples want a personal touch, only a small percentage actually choose to propose at home. But for us, it felt right.
I loved my engagement, even if it wasn’t the grand plan he had in mind. Proposing in our living room felt more genuine and true to our relationship. It was intimate and reflected the bond we share. Now, as we celebrate our eighth anniversary and our first year as parents, I cherish all those little moments we’ve shared together.
We did eventually replace that old couch where it all happened. It was a cozy spot for us, but we’ve moved on to a bigger, more grown-up couch that fits our family now. It’s perfect for lazy days and snuggling with our little one.
