London: The NHS is facing even more pressure as cases of a spreading virus rise. Health leaders are advising people to limit contact if they show symptoms and to wear masks. This comes as infections of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are on the rise.

HMPV is a global concern, with outbreaks reported in countries like China, India, and Malaysia. Experts say it’s not a pandemic threat, but the NHS is already overwhelmed with flu and norovirus cases.

Dr. Andrew Catchpole from hVIVO mentioned that while HMPV mutates, it doesn’t have pandemic potential. It was first discovered in the Netherlands in 2001 and is related to RSV.

In England, HMPV cases surged in December but have stabilized, with 4.5% of respiratory patients testing positive. The highest rates are in kids under five, at 7.2%.

The virus spreads through direct contact or contaminated surfaces, usually causing mild upper respiratory infections. Symptoms are similar to flu, including cough, fever, and a blocked nose, lasting up to two weeks.

Young children and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. Severe cases can lead to lung inflammation and pneumonia.

Dr. Conall Watson from the UK Health Security Agency noted that HMPV is common in winter, typically peaking this time of year. Most kids have had it by age five and can catch it again later.

To reduce the spread, regular hand washing and proper hygiene are key. If you feel unwell, limit contact with others, especially vulnerable individuals. With many viruses circulating, wearing a mask when going out is still a good idea.
