Henna Virkkunen insists the EU is firm on Big Tech regulations despite Trump’s comeback
Brussels: So, Henna Virkkunen, a top EU official, is making it clear that she’s not easing up on Big Tech. She pointed out that there’s a solid legal framework in place and mentioned ongoing investigations into major players like X and Meta.
Recently, there were reports suggesting the EU might be reconsidering its investigations into companies like Apple and Google. But Virkkunen pushed back on that idea during a chat with CNBC.
She highlighted the Digital Services Act, which kicked in just over a year ago, and said there are formal proceedings against all the big platforms, including Instagram and TikTok. They’re serious about making sure these companies follow the rules.
Even with the new powers from the DSA, there are still questions about how the EU will enforce these regulations, especially with Trump back in the picture. Analysts are curious to see how U.S. tech firms will respond to EU rules under his administration.
Interestingly, some big names in tech, like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, are cozying up to Trump as he prepares for his second term. Zuckerberg even suggested that the EU’s approach to competition feels a bit like a tariff.
Virkkunen, who joined the EU’s executive team in December, emphasized that they’re fully enforcing the existing regulations. She didn’t mention feeling any pressure from Trump’s return, stating that all companies, regardless of where they’re from, need to respect EU rules.
In December 2023, X was the first platform to face an EU probe under the DSA, focusing on transparency and illegal content. Virkkunen made it clear that the investigation is about X as a platform, not just Musk.
She stressed that X has responsibilities, especially regarding electoral processes and civic discourse. The EU is keeping a close eye on developments, ensuring that they’re ready to act if needed.
