A gunman asserts self-defense after fatally shooting a man in Brooklyn, with no charges expected against him, sources say.
The shooter said Dillard put him in a chokehold and demanded cash. They fought, and the gunman, who has a concealed carry permit, shot Dillard in the torso. A knife was found at the scene, and it seems they didn’t know each other.
The Brooklyn District Attorney is still looking into the case, but it sounds like the shooter won’t face charges. Dillard’s sister, Brandy, isn’t buying the self-defense story. She believes her brother was set up and points to a text message that suggests he was lured to the park.
Brandy is heartbroken, saying, “That don’t seem right, that’s not my brother.” She insists he wouldn’t have gone to that park. Dillard had no prior run-ins with the law and was supposed to attend a family funeral that day.
Witnesses heard an argument before the gunfire. One local said they heard someone yell, “You’re done!” followed by shots. When police arrived, Dillard was on the ground and later died at the hospital.
Brandy shared that they’re dealing with two deaths in the family this year. Just days before, their cousin was shot in Coney Island. She described her brother as a good man who was trying to improve his life.
He had recently worked with the Red Hook Initiative, helping at-risk youth, but lost the job due to attendance issues. Brandy remembers him as family-oriented and kind-hearted, always checking in on loved ones.
As they prepare for the funerals, she holds onto memories of him enjoying music and walks with his girlfriend. “He did not deserve this,” she said, emphasizing that no one deserves such a fate.
This year, there have been 12 murders in the city, matching last year’s count at this time.
