McKinney: As we remember former President Jimmy Carter, a special project is underway to honor his legacy. Habitat for Humanity of Collin County is starting work on a new home called “The Jimmy Carter House.” This project continues his long-standing mission to provide affordable housing.

Shonda Schaefer, the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Collin County, shared her thoughts on Carter’s humanitarian efforts. She emphasized that his service went beyond his presidency, highlighting how he and his family used Habitat for Humanity to help those in need, especially in housing.

The new home will be built on Green Street for the Guzman family, who have lived on the lot for 30 years. Schaefer expressed her joy in giving back to a family that has contributed so much to the community. Mr. Guzman has worked in construction, while his wife Alma dedicated 20 years as a cafeteria cook at a local elementary school.

The Guzmans faced tough times as their previous home became unlivable due to health issues. Earlier this month, Habitat for Humanity decided the old house was beyond repair and demolished it to make way for the new one.

When Schaefer first met the Guzman family, she felt a strong connection. She believes they deserve a safe and decent place to live. The new house will be safe and allow the couple to stay in their beloved community.

Excitement is in the air as the Guzman family looks forward to their new home. Schaefer is thrilled to honor Jimmy Carter’s legacy by providing a safe space for a family that truly deserves it.

For over 30 years, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter dedicated themselves to helping people find affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity of Collin County feels the loss deeply, as Carter contributed countless hours to the organization, including projects in North Texas.

As Schaefer noted, the goal is to create a comfortable environment for the Guzman family to age gracefully. It’s a privilege to dedicate this home to such a deserving family.

Habitat for Humanity’s Critical Repairs project aims to assist families facing housing insecurity, working alongside the McKinney Community Development Corporation. If you want to support their efforts, there are ways to get involved.
