Oldham: A 71-year-old woman named Marie Hargreaves is facing eviction from her home of over 50 years. The plans to convert her house into a children’s home have been approved, and she’s been given a court notice to leave by January 16.

Marie has been living in the house since 1971 but sold it four years ago. She’s been renting it since then, but her landlord, Jade Sherlock, says that arrangement was only temporary. Now, the court has ruled in favor of the landlord, allowing the eviction to proceed.

Last September, Sherlock applied to change the property’s use to accommodate two children and two carers. While she claims to empathize with Marie, the court upheld her right to take back the property.

Gary Leese, Marie’s carer, is helping her navigate this tough situation. He mentioned that Marie is struggling with anxiety and PTSD, and the news of her eviction has left her heartbroken. It’s the only home she’s ever known.

Marie was already dealing with grief after losing her son, Lee, in July 2022. Gary is trying to get a court hearing to delay the eviction, citing medical reports that show Marie’s mental health struggles.

They’ve also reached out to Oldham council for emergency housing, but there’s no guarantee she’ll find a place in the area. Meanwhile, Jade Sherlock insists she followed all legal procedures and has faced her own challenges throughout this process.

Despite the legal battle, she expresses sympathy for Marie, acknowledging the pain she’s been through. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
