A British grandmother shares her shocking experience of being spiked in Thailand, urging caution to fellow travelers.
Janet, 61, was celebrating the Thai New Year in Bangkok when she thought she was sipping whisky and coke. But after going to bed, she woke up to find hotel staff telling her she had been roaming around for four hours without clothes.
This incident comes amid investigations into the deaths of six tourists in nearby Laos, linked to methanol poisoning from similar drinks. Janet was lucky to escape without serious harm but is now terrified of local spirits.
She warns others to stick to imported drinks or bottled beer, saying the local alcohol isn’t distilled properly. Janet recalls how easy it is to get caught up in the party scene, with free shots being offered everywhere.
Feeling for the victims in Laos, she expressed disgust at those responsible for the dangerous alcohol. Janet has traveled solo since 2022 and fell in love with Thailand years ago, but now she’s much more cautious about what she drinks.
Reflecting on that night, she remembers thinking she was a pregnant teenager and needing help. It’s a scary reminder of how quickly things can go wrong while traveling.
