Grand Forks: The city is gearing up to add a new yard waste collection site on the south side. They just got the green light from the City Council last week.

This new spot will be near South Washington Street and 57th Avenue South. They’re planning to develop it when the 47th Avenue interchange is built, which should be in about four to five years.

Sharon Lipsh, the Public Works Director, mentioned they’ll have everything ready for when the interchange happens. It’ll make trips to the landfill much quicker, which is a big deal since the current route adds a lot of time.

One reason they’re not rushing to build it is the logistics. The landfill is way up in the northwest corner, while this new site is in the southeast. Once it’s up and running, they might close down the sites at Lewis and Clark Elementary and Schroeder Middle School, which would be safer for everyone.

Lipsh pointed out that the 47th Avenue site is super busy, with only two containers, making it tough to get in and out. The school sites are less crowded but have their own schedule since they close when school is in session.

When the new site is built, it’ll be one of the largest in town, with plans for seven containers. That’s the same as the second busiest site at Williamson Field and one more than the public works facility.
