California Governor Gavin Newsom responds to Trump’s misleading statements about wildfires and water management in the state.
Los Angeles: California Governor Gavin Newsom recently took a stand against President Trump’s comments about the wildfires. In an interview, he said misinformation doesn’t help anyone.
Newsom was reacting to Trump’s posts on Truth Social, where he criticized Newsom, President Biden, and others since the fires started. Trump claimed Newsom blocked a water measure that could have helped.
In one of his posts, Trump used a derogatory nickname for Newsom and accused him of not signing a water restoration declaration. He claimed this would have allowed water to flow to areas affected by the fires.
Newsom responded, saying it’s ridiculous to link the delta smelt fish to the wildfires. He emphasized that Trump’s comments are not only inaccurate but also show a lack of understanding of California’s water policy.
Trump also made claims about FEMA funding, suggesting that money was missing and that it was Biden’s fault. Sadly, the wildfires have already claimed at least 16 lives in the Los Angeles area.
In a letter to Trump, Newsom invited him to visit California to see the damage firsthand and thank the firefighters. However, he hasn’t heard back yet.
Newsom expressed concern that Trump might follow through on threats to cut disaster aid to California, recalling past instances where Trump withheld aid from states he disagreed with.
He noted that this pattern has been ongoing for years, affecting various states, and it’s something they take seriously, especially when it comes to getting federal assistance.
