Georgia DOT is working hard to clear roads as icy conditions create hazards statewide
Atlanta: The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is facing tough challenges with icy roads. They’ve been working overnight to treat and clear roads across the state, especially in Atlanta and other regions. Despite their efforts, many roads are still tricky due to freezing temperatures and ice.
Right now, a State of Emergency is in place for all of Georgia. It’s not a good day for travel, so the DOT is asking everyone to stay off the roads if they can. They’re focusing on the interstates and secondary routes, but even those are dangerous in many areas. If you can work from home, it’s a good idea to do so.
Ice is a real headache for the crews. They had pre-treated the roads with brine, but the freezing temps have made it less effective. There have been numerous accidents reported, especially on I-75 and I-95. To tackle the ice, they’re now using salt and calcium chloride and have deployed 448 snowplows across the state.
Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry has asked for patience from the public. He noted that this winter weather is unusual for the state, and they can’t be everywhere at once. They need time and warmer weather to help clear the roads effectively.
Watch out for black ice, especially at night. Even if the ice melts during the day, it can refreeze overnight. If you have to go out, try to wait until it’s light outside.
Be careful on the roads, and check 511GA for updates on traffic and conditions. It’s important to give the DOT crews space to do their jobs safely. If you see a DOT truck, keep your distance to avoid any damage from gravel they might be spreading.
Many local transit services have been delayed or canceled, so check with your local provider for updates. As of now, all Georgia Express Lanes are closed, but they’ll reopen as soon as it’s safe.
