West Chester: A former police officer, Michelle Berling, has admitted to messing with a death investigation. She pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence in court.

This all went down in Butler County, where she faced a third-degree felony charge. As part of her plea deal, the prosecutors are dropping three other felony charges against her.

Berling could end up with a maximum of three years in prison and a hefty fine of $10,000. She’s accused of altering camera data linked to the investigation of a woman found dead in June.

On top of that, she allegedly misused police resources for personal reasons around the same time. The West Chester police caught wind of her actions in August, leading to an independent investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

After being suspended and placed on paid leave, Berling resigned just two days before her indictment on four felony charges. Her attorney, Stew Mathews, hasn’t commented much since the case is still ongoing. She’s set to be back in court for sentencing on February 24.
