The initial findings of the special counsel’s report on Trump’s election actions may be public soon after a judge’s ruling.
Fort Pierce: So, it looks like the first part of the special counsel’s report about Trump trying to overturn the 2020 election might drop soon. A federal judge just shot down his last-ditch effort to keep it under wraps.
Now, there’s also a second part of the report about Trump’s handling of classified documents, but that one’s still under wraps. The judge in Florida, Aileen Cannon, hasn’t decided if that will be released yet.
She’s got a hearing lined up for Friday to figure that out. This whole situation has been a bit of a rollercoaster, especially with Trump’s legal team trying to block the report from coming out.
Special counsel reports usually get a lot of attention since they deal with sensitive political stuff. They start off confidential, but the attorney general can make them public. Plus, Congress gets to see them first.
With Trump winning the election and the criminal cases against him getting tossed, this report is really Smith’s last chance to share any new details about the charges.
But honestly, it’s unclear how much new info will actually be in there. Even if it all gets released, there will probably be some redactions, especially regarding the documents case.
Trump’s legal team is not happy about the report being made public. They argue that the judge had previously dismissed the documents case because Smith wasn’t confirmed by the Senate.
Also, Trump’s former co-defendants in that case are worried that the report could hurt their defense since prosecutors are still appealing the dismissal.
Last week, Cannon put a hold on releasing either part of the report until the appeals court made a decision. The appeals court didn’t buy the arguments from Trump’s co-defendants, sending the issue back to Cannon.
They asked for another hold, and she granted it for the documents case but not for the election case. So, we’ll see what happens next!
