In a heartfelt ceremony, Burtonsville firefighters honor their fallen comrade, Master Firefighter Christopher Higgins, who died in the line of duty.

On Tuesday morning, it was a somber scene as his fellow firefighters stood at attention, paying their respects. Higgins had been with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue for 23 years, and his loss hit hard.
Battalion Chief Rafael Gibson, who worked closely with Higgins, shared how much he admired him. He called Higgins a “fireman’s fireman” and emphasized the high standards he set for everyone.
Gibson remembered Higgins not just as a colleague but as a dear friend. They spent holidays together, and their families were close.
As the team copes with this loss, MCFRS is grateful for the community’s support during this tough time. They’re taking the lead on how to grieve and appreciate the understanding from everyone.
After the tribute, Higgins’ body was taken to a funeral home in Anne Arundel County, with a service planned for January 24. Meanwhile, Prince George’s County Fire Officials are investigating the fire that took Higgins’ life, which started in the carport and spread to the house, affecting a neighbor’s property as well. It took about 50 firefighters half an hour to get it under control, and the cause is still being looked into.
