Moss Landing: A fire broke out at the Moss Landing Power Plant in California on Thursday. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office quickly urged nearby residents to evacuate.

This isn’t the first time the plant has faced issues like fires or power outages. The North County Fire Protection District responded to the incident, and the sheriff’s office advised locals to close windows and doors and turn off air systems.

A few hours later, evacuation orders were issued, and parts of California’s Highway 1 were shut down. Satellite imagery showed a heat signature, indicating the fire’s intensity.

Neither Vistra Energy, the plant’s owner, nor the sheriff’s office provided details on what caused the fire. They also didn’t respond to requests for comments after hours.

It’s still unclear how much damage has occurred or if the fire is under control. Vistra Energy had previously announced the plant’s expansion, highlighting its status as one of the largest battery storage facilities globally.

The Moss Landing facility has a history of problems, including a transmission tower collapse in 2015 that caused a major outage. In 2021, a failing heat detector led to damage, and a fire occurred at a nearby battery plant in 2022.

This fire comes amid wildfires in the Los Angeles area, which have devastated over 40,000 acres and resulted in at least 25 fatalities. The estimated cost of these wildfires is between $250 and $275 billion.

This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates.
