FEMA is providing more than $770 to California wildfire victims, with additional aid available
The wildfires have been brutal, causing massive destruction and forcing over 100,000 people to evacuate. Sadly, many have lost their lives or are still missing. People online are saying the government isn’t doing enough, and some posts are comparing the aid to what’s spent on foreign assistance.
But here’s the scoop: that $770 is just part of the aid. It falls under a program called Serious Needs Assistance, which is meant to help with urgent needs. Victims can also apply for other types of assistance, like help with temporary housing and home repairs.
Rep. Brad Sherman pointed out that there are various forms of aid available beyond that initial payment. This isn’t the first time misinformation has spread about FEMA’s help after disasters.
Interestingly, California wildfire victims are actually getting a bit more than those affected by Hurricane Helene, thanks to adjustments for inflation. FEMA has rolled out new programs to make it easier for survivors to get help, including covering hotel stays while they sort out long-term housing.
Biden mentioned that the federal government has already dished out over $5 million in aid to nearly 6,000 survivors. And even though FEMA faced funding issues last year, Congress stepped in with a $29 billion boost for disaster relief.
So, while some folks are worried about how the government spends its money, FEMA assures that disaster funds are separate and not being diverted elsewhere. They’re committed to helping those in need.
