Remember last summer when folks at the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building had to work from home due to the awful conditions outside? Well, that’s not the case anymore. Trump’s order means everyone’s back in the office, including those in that SF building.
Now, Biden had already nudged federal workers to return to the office back in August 2023. But this new order adds a hiring freeze and makes it easier to let go of career civil servants. It seems less about the benefits of remote work and more about bringing in Trump supporters.
Trump’s order mentions that some federal employees have been resisting his policies. He claims it’s all about restoring accountability in the civil service. But many unions are ready to fight back, especially since some have remote work in their contracts.
Everett Kelly, the president of the American Federation of Government Employees, called this a blatant attempt to corrupt the federal government. He’s worried that hiring will be based on loyalty to Trump rather than merit.
This could end up in court, especially since there are about 2.3 million federal employees. It’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on.
