Washington: Outgoing FBI Director Christopher Wray shared on Sunday that he’s stepping down when President-elect Donald Trump takes office. He wants to keep the bureau from getting caught up in more controversy, especially after the 2022 raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

In a candid chat on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Wray talked about his resignation, the Mar-a-Lago search, and how he sees China as a major threat today. He mentioned that leaving before his term ends was a tough call, but he felt it was necessary.

Wray, who’s been in the role for over seven years, said he cares deeply about the FBI and its mission. He noted that Trump had made it clear he wanted to make changes, and legally, he could do that for any reason.

He explained that he thought it was best to handle his departure smoothly to avoid dragging the FBI into more political mess. Wray faced backlash from Trump after the raid, which was aimed at finding classified documents that Trump allegedly mishandled.

Despite the heat, Wray stood by his team, emphasizing that the FBI’s job is to follow the facts, regardless of who gets upset. He insisted that the search was a last resort when they found classified materials weren’t stored properly.

Wray also mentioned he hasn’t talked to the Biden administration about any investigations into Trump and believes no one else in the FBI has either. He defended the FBI’s investigation into Hunter Biden, who faced legal issues before being pardoned by his father.

He pointed out that the job is tough and will inevitably anger some powerful people. Wray also raised alarms about the growing threats from China, especially regarding cyberattacks and targeting critical infrastructure like water treatment and energy systems.

Looking ahead, the challenges posed by China might fall to Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, but he’ll need Senate approval first.
