Timothy Beard delivered a heartfelt address at the MLK celebration, reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy and his own journey.

He shared how he felt “thrilled, elated, flattered, and humbled” to be there. During his speech, he said, “I am living the dream,” emphasizing that his achievements are a testament to Dr. King’s sacrifices. Beard recalled his own birth story, noting that his mother had to enter the hospital through the back door because of racial segregation. He humorously added that he was born on the ground but didn’t stay there, thanks to the work of Dr. King.
Beard highlighted the importance of nonviolence, unity, and love, quoting Dr. King’s Nobel Peace Prize speech. He reminded everyone that while progress has been made, there’s still work to do. His speech received a standing ovation, and he was honored with the MLK 2025 Guardian of Legacy award.
The event also recognized several local leaders for their contributions to civil rights and community service. As the celebration continued, Beard and others reflected on the ongoing journey toward justice and equality. The city’s MLK celebrations will carry on throughout the week, including an annual convocation at FAMU and a parade in honor of Dr. King.
