KANSAS CITY: So, here’s the scoop. John Anderton was shot and killed by a Kansas City, Kansas police officer back in February 2023. His family is now taking legal action, filing a federal lawsuit against the officer, the police chief, and the Unified Government.

The incident went down near North 52nd Street and Georgia Avenue. Anderton, who was 50, was riding his bike away from a double-overdose scene when things took a tragic turn. Thankfully, no one died from those overdoses.

He managed to get about half a mile away before he had some sort of encounter with a KCK officer. Six months later, the Wyandotte County District Attorney, Mark Dupree, said the shooting was justified. He claimed Anderton was reaching for a gun when the officer fired.

Now, the family is arguing that excessive force was used during the shooting. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department hasn’t commented on the lawsuit since it’s still pending. It’s a tough situation all around.
