Chicago: This weekend and on Monday, January 20, the city is buzzing with events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. You can catch performances, panel discussions, and art exhibitions. Plus, there are plenty of chances to volunteer or visit museums.
Block Club Chicago has put together a list of 21 events for anyone wanting to celebrate King’s life and legacy. There are activities for kids too, especially since Chicago Public Schools are closed on Monday.

One highlight is the MLK Day of Service and Learning at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, featuring speakers like Rev. Jim Wallis and Archbishop Desmond Tutu Chair Rev. Otis Moss III. It’s happening Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and tickets are free online.
For those who prefer the outdoors, there’s a trash-collecting event at Caldwell Woods on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s a great way to give back while enjoying nature.
Another event is the MLK Day Celebration at Catholic Theological Union, featuring a film screening and a guest speaker who has a rich history with the Civil Rights movement.
On Sunday, Nitro Nostalgia is hosting a family-friendly event with special ice cream and community reflections from noon to 3 p.m. It’s a sweet way to celebrate!
Monday kicks off with a breakfast at Soldier Field, honoring Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. and featuring performances by the Uniting Voices Chicago youth choir. Tickets are $150, but it’s a great way to support a good cause.
There are also webinars led by historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas discussing King’s legacy, and a community breakfast at Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church, where King once preached.
For families, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is hosting a Family Day with art activities and exhibits from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday.
Amundsen Park will have a special day for kids with scavenger hunts and crafts, while the Chicago History Museum will feature arts and crafts, a sing-along, and a film screening.
At the Chicago Children’s Museum, kids can enjoy storytelling and art activities throughout the day. Plus, My Block My Hood My City is organizing meal deliveries for seniors, and volunteers are welcome.
Hyde Park Art Center will have a full day of events, including live music and interactive activities, all free of charge. And don’t miss the free sing-along at the Old Town School of Music focusing on Black women in liberation struggles.
Finally, the Inner City Muslim-Action Network is hosting a panel discussion honoring both King and Muhammad Ali, and the MLK Skating and Bowling Center will have a fun celebration with games and activities.
