Elon Musk and Sam Altman are at odds over the funding status of the Stargate AI project

Trump is calling Stargate “the largest AI infrastructure project in history,” but Musk isn’t buying it. He pointed out that SoftBank has secured “well under $10 billion” for the project, which is a far cry from the lofty goal.
This all kicked off when OpenAI posted on X, saying they’d start deploying $100 billion right away. Musk jumped in, saying that’s not the case. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, didn’t take it lying down. He challenged Musk, saying his claims were wrong and even invited him to check out a site where the funding is already in action.
These two have a bit of a rocky history, especially since Musk founded xAI, which competes with OpenAI. Altman’s response was pretty pointed, suggesting Musk should prioritize what’s good for the country over his own business interests.
SoftBank hasn’t commented on this back-and-forth, and neither Musk nor OpenAI has responded to requests for comments. It’s clear there’s some tension among these tech giants just days into Trump’s second term.
The Stargate project is seen as a significant collaboration between Big Tech and Trump, with promises of investments, job creation, and making AGI a reality in the U.S. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, was asked about Musk’s claims but didn’t confirm or deny them, just saying he’s good for his own $80 billion investment in AI. It’s a wild ride in the tech world right now!
