Calumet Township: As the caucus nears, eight candidates are stepping up to run for trustee. The last application came in just before the deadline, which was 6 p.m. on Monday.

The candidates include Sherita Smith, Shanita Starks, Tai Adkins, McKenya Dilworth-Smith, Sharon Chambers, Glenn Johnson, Carol Ann Seaton, and Linda Collins Brown. Jim Wieser, the Lake County Democratic Party chairman, confirmed they all made the cut.

Interestingly, Gary Councilman Darren Washington had shown interest in the position but never filed his application. He announced he wouldn’t be running, stating he wants to focus on his council role and strengthen the local Democratic party.

Washington emphasized the importance of safer neighborhoods and economic development in his statement. He believes that local government needs to be a priority, especially in light of national politics.

After the resignation of former Trustee Kim Robinson, a caucus is necessary. Robinson pleaded guilty to wire fraud, which involved misusing township funds. She’s set to serve probation and repay the money.

The caucus will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Calumet Township Multipurpose Center in Gary. If someone is elected, another caucus will be needed to fill their previous position.

Among the candidates, Tai Adkins is the only one currently holding an elected office. She aims to bring her experience to the trustee role, focusing on fiscal responsibility and community service.

Sherita Smith, who has been with the trustee’s office for a decade, wants to continue existing programs like the food pantry and energy assistance.

Shanita Starks, a local entrepreneur, is looking to bring change and focus on resources for the homeless. She believes the community is ready for new ideas.

McKenya Dilworth-Smith, a faculty member at Ivy Tech, wants to ensure transparency and economic sustainability if elected.

Sharon Chambers aims to improve the quality of life in Gary, while Linda Collins Brown wants to provide essential services to underprivileged families.

Glenn Johnson has experience on the school board, and Carol Ann Seaton has faced challenges in her political past but remains a candidate.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting race, and the community is eager to see who will step up to serve.
