Edmonton is extending funding for Chinatown events to boost safety and attract visitors despite ongoing concerns about crime and social disorder

This fund started in April 2024, initially putting $480,000 into over a dozen projects like Chinatown Dining Week and the Edmonton Dragon Festival. The aim is to revitalize the area and draw in visitors, especially since the neighborhood has faced social issues and crime lately.
Back in May 2022, two men were tragically killed in Chinatown, which really shook the community and sparked calls for change. This led to a recovery plan for the area.
In response, city officials increased police and peace officer presence in Chinatown, but that pilot project wrapped up in December 2024. Safety concerns are still a big issue, with local business owners sharing their worries about homelessness and drug use.
Shirley Tang, who runs Hong Kong Bakery, expressed her fears, saying, “All staff are scared. Sometimes the homeless sleep at our door and block it.”
On a brighter note, Edmonton police report a drop in crime in areas they patrol. The city is determined to make Chinatown a go-to spot for everyone in Edmonton, and this fund is a step in that direction.
Mayor Amarjeet Sohi emphasized the importance of celebrating Chinatown’s rich history and economic potential. He said they want to invest in community-led projects that will have a lasting impact.
The city is encouraging community groups to apply for this new funding. They’re looking for project ideas that will boost the economy, celebrate Chinatown, and enhance safety. Applications are due by February 28.
