DOGE plans to embed staff at key agencies to enhance efficiency and cut costs

The commission has been on a hiring spree since November. They’re looking to embed staffers to help lead these efforts. If you’re not placed at an agency, you might end up at the US Digital Service, which is all about IT consulting for federal agencies.
Musk’s commission might even set up shop at the Office of Management and Budget, which handles the president’s budget requests. Musk hasn’t commented on this yet, but it’s clear they’re moving fast.
Back in November, Trump announced that Musk and biotech billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy would co-lead DOGE. They aim to wrap up their work by July 4, 2026. The commission kicked off recruitment on Musk’s platform X, asking people to send in their resumes.
So far, they’re hiring for roles in software engineering, IT, and finance. Musk has mentioned that DOGE could help save the government around $2 trillion, although he hasn’t detailed how. The federal government spent a whopping $6.75 trillion in the last fiscal year.
Musk recently said that saving $2 trillion would be the best-case scenario, but he believes they could realistically save about $1 trillion. He’s optimistic that if they can cut the budget deficit, it could lead to economic growth without inflation. Sounds ambitious, right?
