Edmonton: So, it was a pretty mild day in Edmonton, hitting five degrees on Friday. Everyone was out enjoying the dog parks, but that warmth comes with some risks.

On Friday afternoon, the fire department got a call about a dog that fell through an ice shelf at Hermitage Park. Thankfully, they managed to rescue the pup and bring it back to safety.

One guy, Jeffrey Kelly, who trains horses, shared his own experience with ice. He’s been there, and so has one of his dogs. He described it as feeling pretty helpless and cold.

Jeffrey had some solid advice: make sure your dog is well-trained. He emphasized how important it is to use your voice effectively when calling them back.

Even though the fire department hasn’t seen a spike in ice rescue calls this week, they’re reminding everyone to keep a safe distance from the North Saskatchewan River and those frozen stormwater ponds.

Just because the ice looks thick doesn’t mean it is. With the water flowing underneath and the changing temperatures, there can be weak spots.

If you ever see someone or a pet fall through the ice, don’t try to rescue them yourself. Just call 9-1-1 and let the professionals handle it.
