Montgomery: I’ve got to say, I remember those “Where’s the beef?” ads from Wendy’s back in the ’80s. They really hit home for me as a meat lover. Back then, it felt like every burger was just too small.

Honestly, I’ve probably eaten enough beef to feed a small army. It’s my go-to for dinner, whether it’s tacos, steaks, or good old burgers. So juicy and tasty!

This week, I’m checking out some old-school beef recipes from the Montgomery Advertiser. They’re a bit different, but I think you’ll enjoy them.

First up is a Beef Salad from 1867. It’s a unique twist on a salad that even the Wendy’s lady would appreciate. You’ll need cooked roast beef, boiled potatoes, lettuce, and hard-boiled egg whites. Mix it all up with some salt and pepper, and for the dressing, blend the yolks with butter, mustard, and vinegar. It’s a great side dish!

Next, we have Beef Tea from 1893. It’s basically a beef broth, perfect for soothing sore throats during cold season. Just simmer some beef, press out the juices, and you’ve got a warm, nutritious drink. It’s a bit of a hassle compared to just using bouillon cubes, but I bet it’s way tastier!

Lastly, there’s Hamburg Steaks from 1895. These are like hamburger steaks with gravy. Mix ground beef with onion, salt, and pepper, form them into balls, and fry them up. The gravy is made with flour and boiling water, and it’s all poured over the steaks. Sounds delicious, right?

If you give any of these recipes a shot, send a photo and let me know how it turned out! You can email Shannon Heupel at sheupel@gannett.com.
