Copenhagen: Danish leaders have been reaching out to Donald Trump’s team lately. They want to smooth things over regarding his interest in Greenland.

They’re even considering allowing a U.S. military presence on the island. This move is meant to boost security and keep Trump happy. He had mentioned using “military coercion” to bring Greenland under U.S. control, which raised eyebrows.

The Danish government, responsible for Greenland’s defense, is trying to avoid any conflict with the U.S. They want to assure Trump that Greenland can stay safe from Russia and China without needing to be annexed.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s leader, Múte Egede, are open to discussing the island’s future with Trump’s team. Trump has suggested military force could be an option for annexation, which shocked many.

Copenhagen is also asking for clarification on Trump’s comments about possibly invading Denmark, a NATO ally. One diplomat noted that Denmark is seen as a close U.S. ally in the EU, and it’s surprising that Trump would target them first.

Greenland was a Danish colony since the 18th century and became self-governing in 1953. In 2009, it gained the right to seek independence if they choose. Egede supports this independence but is against annexation.

At a recent press conference, Egede expressed willingness to talk about Greenland’s future but emphasized that his people don’t want to become Americans. He said, “We are ready to talk. Cooperation is about dialogue.”

The U.S. already has a military base in Greenland and a defense agreement from 1951, making it easy to increase troop presence. Greenland’s strategic importance has grown due to melting Arctic waterways and the race for resources between the U.S. and Russia. The territory is rich in critical minerals and natural resources, making it even more valuable.
