Democrats are set to question Pete Hegseth on his past views about women in combat during his confirmation hearing for defense secretary.
Hegseth, who’s a former combat veteran and was on Fox News, is expecting some tough questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee. They’re set to meet at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The senators are likely to bring up his earlier remarks about female troops and some serious allegations against him, including claims of sexual assault and excessive drinking. They’re trying to figure out if he’s the right person to lead the Pentagon.
Democrat Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War vet who lost her legs in combat, has been vocal about her concerns. She’s not holding back, saying he’s the most unqualified person for the job.
Last year, Hegseth made some pretty strong comments against women in combat on a podcast, saying it complicates fighting and doesn’t make the military more effective. But he later tried to clarify, saying his words were taken out of context and praised women in the military.
He’s also facing allegations of sexual assault, which he denies. Senator Mazie Hirono plans to ask him about these accusations during the hearing, focusing on the public claims against him.
It’s going to be a tense day for Hegseth, that’s for sure!
