DeMar DeRozan made a heartfelt return to Chicago, scoring 21 points as the Kings defeated the Bulls in a memorable game.
Chicago: The Bulls have really gotten good at celebrating their past. Honestly, it’s probably a smart move since the present isn’t looking too bright.
Before the game on Sunday, you could hear Kendrick Lamar and Nipsey Hussle playing in the Kings’ locker room. Fans were rocking No. 11 jerseys all around the United Center.
DeMar DeRozan was back at the UC for the first time since he joined the Kings in a sign-and-trade deal last offseason. He dropped 21 points, helping the Kings win 124-119.
During a timeout in the first quarter, the Bulls honored DeRozan with a video tribute. He mentioned how coming to Chicago in 2021 helped him find his joy again.
DeRozan recalled his first meeting with the Bulls’ front office, where they told him to just be himself. He said that led to him becoming an All-Star and achieving so much during his time there.
He really left a mark on the Bulls, both on and off the court. Coaches and players praised his skills, but it was his character that truly stood out.
Forward Patrick Williams shared how DeRozan invited him and others to his home for a summer. It’s not every day you get to be part of a veteran’s family like that.
DeRozan helped young players like Williams, Coby White, and Dalen Terry grow in the NBA. He calls them his “sons” and loves seeing their progress.
He said, “Every time I hung out with those guys, it was real. I just wanted them to be great people first.” He emphasized the importance of staying balanced through the ups and downs.
Even now, he feels proud to see them mature and grow. The respect he has for them will always be there.
There’s always going to be that “what-if” when talking about DeRozan’s time with the Bulls. After Lonzo Ball’s injury, the team didn’t really change its core, and they struggled.
With Ball back this season and LaVine and Vucevic playing at a high level, those “what-if” thoughts are even stronger.
DeRozan acknowledged that it’s a thought that lingers, especially since they all came together with high hopes. But things didn’t pan out as they had hoped.
Still, his legacy in Chicago is solid. He was reliable, clutch, and a true professional during his time there.
“From the moment I got here, I tried to give my all to this organization and the city,” DeRozan said. “You can’t fake that kind of commitment to the Bulls.”
