A Decatur man received a life sentence for killing a woman and injuring her fiancé during a dispute over their rental home

The whole thing started over a dispute about their rental home, which Hunter’s father owned. On that fateful day, police got a call about a shooting on Dove Valley Road. When they arrived, they found Cardell lying in the street with a gunshot wound. Sadly, she later died at the hospital.
Hunter was arrested right there at the scene. He claimed that Cardell and Dupree had threatened him and his father. But Dupree told detectives that they were just trying to resolve issues with their landlord, who had cut off their utilities.
Things escalated when the couple went to talk to Hunter and his dad. Hunter went inside, grabbed a gun, and came back out to shoot Cardell. Dupree tried to escape in his car, but Hunter fired at him too. Dupree managed to drive to the jail for help.
In the end, Hunter said he was trying to protect his father, but investigators found no evidence that Cardell or Dupree were armed. It’s a heartbreaking situation that ended in a life sentence for Hunter.
