Former Governor Andrew Cuomo has $7.7 million in his campaign fund, hinting at a possible return to politics amid ongoing legal battles.

Even though he hasn’t officially said he’s running again, polls show he’s leading in the New York City mayoral primary coming up in June. That’s pretty interesting, right?
He hasn’t been raising money since he left office, but his loyal supporters have been chipping in small amounts over the years. It seems like he’s still got a solid fan base.
Cuomo’s legal troubles are winding down, so he’s spending less on lawyers now. He dropped about $7.2 million on legal fees since spring 2021, but only $56,000 in the last six months.
There’s a state law that lets candidates get taxpayer money back for legal fees if they’re accused of crimes that don’t lead to convictions. Cuomo’s already snagged $1 million in refunds, and more could be on the way.
He also spent $20,000 on polling recently, using a firm he’s worked with before. If he decides to run for mayor, he can only move a small part of his campaign fund to that effort.
But he’s got options. He can use that money for big checks to charities or help other candidates. He even donated $3,000 to four Assembly members last year, three of whom are from New York City.
Another option is to transfer all his funds to a super PAC. That way, he wouldn’t be directly involved in the strategy, but the money could go toward campaign ads.
