Columbus City Council has approved funding for sidewalks near Independence High School, but the city still faces a significant sidewalk deficit.

Council member Lourdes Barroso de Padilla acknowledged the city’s sidewalk shortage. She mentioned they’re working hard to improve the situation. The project includes a $3.9 million contract with Trucco Construction and has been in the works since students requested safer paths back in 2018.
The plan is to build five-foot sidewalks on both sides of Refugee Road, along with resurfacing the road and improving drainage. It’s all part of the Operation Safewalks to School program aimed at making routes safer for students.
The city is also looking to require new developments to include sidewalks and is using funds from a recent transit levy to help with these projects. So, while this new sidewalk is a win, there’s still a long way to go for Columbus to catch up on its sidewalk needs.
