Colorado Springs: A new partnership is forming to manage federal lands around Pikes Peak. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) will team up with various agencies to tackle issues like trash and overcrowding.

Governor Jared Polis announced this collaboration during his State of the State address. The goal is to improve recreational opportunities while protecting the environment. The Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance has been pushing for this change for a while.

Polis emphasized that this is just the beginning of a long-term plan. They want to enhance activities like camping and hiking while benefiting the local economy. CPW has a solid track record in managing outdoor spaces, so many are optimistic.

One of the first projects is completing the Ring the Peak trail, which will eventually stretch about 95 miles. Currently, 63 miles are already in place. This trail has been a dream for local outdoor enthusiasts for years.

Becky Leinweber from the PPORA is excited about CPW’s involvement. She believes it will lead to better management and more camping options. The area has seen a rise in visitors, and more facilities are needed.

While CPW will manage these lands, federal regulations will still apply. This means they’ll have to follow existing rules while working on improvements. The partnership aims to balance the needs of various outdoor users, from hikers to hunters.

Overall, this collaboration is about working together to preserve the beauty of Pikes Peak while ensuring everyone can enjoy it. It’s a win-win for the community and the environment.
