Cleveland: The city is taking a stand against the Browns. They filed a lawsuit to stop the team from moving to a new stadium in Brook Park, which is about 15 miles away.

The Browns want to build a $2.4 billion dome facility, but Cleveland is using the Modell Law to block the move. This law says if a team gets taxpayer money for their stadium, they can’t just leave without permission or proper notice.

The Browns announced their plans back in October, and the city is not happy about it. They argue that the law is clear: if the team takes public funds, they need to give the city a chance to buy the team or at least get permission to move.

The team’s owners, Dee and Jimmy Haslam, say they’re looking for a better long-term solution for the stadium. They believe the new location will be more convenient for fans, with better parking options.

Interestingly, the Modell Law has been used before to keep teams in Ohio. It helped prevent the Columbus Crew from moving to Texas a few years back. The Haslams have a history with this, as they also bought the Crew to keep them in the state.

Cleveland had previously offered the Browns a 30-year lease extension and a hefty sum for stadium upgrades, but it seems that wasn’t enough.

This isn’t the first time the Browns have faced relocation. They originally started in Cleveland in 1946 but moved to Baltimore in 1996. The NFL later helped bring them back in 1999, and they’ve been playing at Huntington Bank Field since then.
