Castlefield is undergoing a significant cleanup after recent floods left behind a thick layer of sludge on the towpaths

It’s been almost two weeks since Greater Manchester faced those heavy floods, and the mud is still everywhere. South Manchester areas like Stockport and Didsbury took a big hit, but Castlefield wasn’t spared either.
The heavy rain caused the canals to overflow, leaving a lot of mud to clear away. Manchester City Council teams are out there with machinery, tackling the mess. The freezing temperatures made things even trickier for the cleanup.
Councillor Anthony McCaul shared updates on X, saying the Castlefield basin and nearby car park were badly affected. He thanked the city team for their hard work during these tough conditions.
The floods were serious enough that over 400 people had to be evacuated from the Britannia Country House hotel in Didsbury. Emergency services also helped evacuate folks from Meadow Mill in Stockport when the river Tame overflowed.
Now, the car park and lower floors of that former mill turned apartment complex are flooded. Stockport council is working on finding temporary housing for those affected.
Even now, nearly two weeks later, there’s still a lot of cleanup to do. A major incident was declared in Greater Manchester on New Year’s Day, and emergency workers were scrambling to help everyone. The cleanup continues, but the community is coming together to get things back to normal.
